Mpishi Energy / Sustainability & ESG

Power that holds up to scrutiny.

Our projects are being prepared for financing by lenders and development-finance institutions that hold projects to international environmental, social and governance standards. We build those standards in from the first site visit, not at financial close.

Our commitments.

Environmental, social and governance commitments that apply to every Mpishi project company and are written into our contracts with EPC contractors and suppliers.

Environment

  • Displace fossil grid emissions, with emissions avoided calculated using the UNFCCC-approved grid emission factor for the Southern African Power Pool.
  • Biodiversity screening at every site, with baseline ecology surveys informing layout and DNPW consultation where a site lies within a Game Management Area.
  • Low-water operations, battery end-of-life and module recycling plans, and waste managed under the ESMS.
  • Construction to World Bank Group EHS Guidelines.

Social

  • Local hiring and skills targets in every EPC contract, with women's participation tracked.
  • Community liaison officers and a free, accessible grievance mechanism at each site.
  • Freehold land acquired on a willing-seller basis, with any displacement impacts assessed and managed under IFC PS5.
  • Labour standards consistent with ILO core conventions through the supply chain, including screening for forced labour in module sourcing.

Governance

  • Ring-fenced project companies with independent audit and lender reporting.
  • Approved Ethical Guidelines, Anti-Corruption and Whistleblowing, Gender Equality, SEAH, Confidentiality and Privacy policies.
  • Know-your-counterparty checks on every investor, contractor and agent.
  • ESG risks reviewed at Board level and disclosed to lenders.

Frameworks we apply

  • IFC Performance StandardsThe E&S framework our ESMS is built on, PS1–PS8.
  • Equator PrinciplesProject documentation structured for EP-adopting lenders' review.
  • World Bank Group EHS GuidelinesGeneral and sector guidelines applied in construction and operation.
  • ZEMA ESIA regimeZambian environmental authorisation under the Environmental Management Act.
  • UN Sustainable Development GoalsContributing primarily to SDG 7, 8, 9 and 13.
  • GRI StandardsReference framework for our planned annual sustainability disclosure.
  • IFC Exclusion ListWe do not undertake, finance or contract for activities on the IFC Exclusion List.
  • ILO core labour standardsApplied to our workforce and required of contractors and suppliers.

Reporting

We report E&S performance to our lenders under the terms of each financing, including incidents, grievances, labour and community indicators. Once Daybreak reaches commercial operation we will publish an annual sustainability disclosure with reference to the GRI Standards, covering generation, emissions displaced, safety, local employment and grievance outcomes.

Emissions avoided will be calculated using the UNFCCC-approved Southern African Power Pool grid emission factor and reported against metered output once plants operate. IFC and Equator Principles alignment is self-assessed and verified by lenders' independent E&S consultants.
